Take the bus. Take the commuter train. Or drive? Which do you prefer to do?

I personally am a fan of public transit – when it works! Right now, Montreal is going through construction of a new rapid rail line. Part of it is functioning and the rest of it is not ready yet. This will be a learning curve for me when I first use it. But if it gets me downtown fast, I’m all for it.

Driving short distances is fine for me but for a longer journey I prefer someone else to drive. Wasting time sitting in a traffic jam drives me crazy. The anxiety about being late for a meeting or an appointment. The worry about finding parking. No thanks.

For years I commuted downtown to work by bus to the train station, took then by train to the downtown area. The service was usually on time once they brought in newer trains – before that we’d often had delays but in the last years that I was commuting I had no complaints.

The great thing about public transit is that if you can snag a seat you can read. When I was doing a management program at night and working during the day, I would do my homework on the train. Or read. Or write. It was great.

These days I don’t have to commute so I do drive around my area. And usually only at times when the traffic is light which suits me. Plus, out in the suburbs parking is often easier and parking lots more available.

At times I have taken cabs but recently discovered a car service you can book. I needed to get somewhere downtown that I was unfamiliar with so tried it out. It was great. Picked up at the front door and delivered at my destination. No hassles. So now there’s another possibility for getting around.

What about you? Do you take public transport? Do you drive everywhere? What’s your preference?
