So, vacation time. Time off that you can use to work on your TBR (To Be Read) pile of new books. Lazy afternoons in the garden or on the beach or at the lake. A book on your lap and an ice-cold drink nearby. Perhaps some snacks.

So where do you like to read best?

Some people have told me they have a favourite lawn chair outside and a favourite armchair in their living room or den. Others love to read while travelling to make the time pass faster. Or there’s always reading while you eat dinner but if there are others at the table, that is kind of anti-social.

When I commuted downtown for work, I used to read on the train or the bus. It help make the journey shorter. I just had to pay attention so that I got off at the right stop.

But my favourite place to read has always been in bed. I started reading under the blankets with a flashlight when I was a child. I was supposed to be asleep but books were just too intriguing. I still love to read there today – minus the flashlight.

Snuggled down in my covers and resting on a pile of pillows I can experience all kinds of adventures in the books I chose to read.

A second favorite place is on my balcony in late afternoon but recent roadwork has made it difficult – yes, I live in Montreal and the orange cones have invaded our neighbourhood. It is hard to concentrate on your hero or heroine when the trucks are beeping or the road drills are hammering away. The city has promised it will be over by the end of summer. Thanks, but that’s my favorite balcony reading time. Sigh.

Balcony, bedroom, on a sofa or armchair, in bed or on a train, what’s your favourite place to read?
