Mindfulness has helped me a lot over the years. I have learned to almost completely let go of the past – but still working on it. Being in the moment and savouring each second is an important lesson to learn as well. Self-care – paying attention to what your mind and body need is essential. And of course, meditation is a great tool.

I meditate daily but sometimes only for a few minutes. No one is timing you and if that is all you have time for that day, then it is more important that you pay attention to your need for it than the length of your meditation. At another time, you may choose a longer meditation session. It is your personal decision.

I enjoy meditating to music – ocean sounds are a particular favourite. I can attune my breathing to the sound of the waves coming and going and sense the past washing away. Usually, I just sit in my favourite armchair, listen to the music and let it do its magic. Sometimes though, I prefer silence, as even a few minutes of can be very therapeutic. At other times, I use breathing and repeating a personal mantra. You have to find what works for you.

Recently, when thinking about meditation and what it brings to us, I came up with the following list of what it can help us with in our daily lives.

MEDITATE

Mindfulness – Practise daily.

Emerge – Get out of your comfort zone.

Direction – Decide on your path.

Introspection – Reflect on your personal needs.

Target – Focus on your goals.

Action – Take steps and use tools

Energy – Let renewed energy move you forward.
